Beijing Olympics’ Fuwa Mascots Popular In China

Ninety-eight percent of Chinese people can name the five Fuwa who will serve as the official mascots of the upcoming Beijing Olympics, according to recent research conducted by Nielsen.
The survey, conducted in late June, also found that the Fuwa are popular in China.  Sixty percent of respondents said they “like” or “really like” them, while more than 20% were neutral, and just 15% said they “dislike” the Fuwa.

Primetime Broadcast Ratings: July 22, 2008

NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” claimed the top slot by an unusually wide margin in Nielsen’s ranking of primetime broadcast TV programs for July 22, 2008.   The show drew an audience of 13.2 million viewers Tuesday night.
ABC’s “Wipeout” and CBS’s “NCIS” came in second and third, respectively, with 9.9 million viewers and 8.5 million viewers each.

Feeling the Pinch: UK Consumers Cut Food Spending

More than half (55%) of UK consumers are cutting back on food purchases, Nielsen reported Wednesday.  Last year, Nielsen’s Homescan survey found that just a third (36%) of UK consumers were trying to reduce grocery spending.  
Meanwhile, sales at low-cost food retailers are growing.  In the last 12 weeks, Tesco’s sales were up 6.1% over the same time perod last year. Sales at Asda (+8.9%) and Morrison’s (+9.5%) grew by even larger percentages during the same period.

For Offline Retailers, Online Presence Now A Must

Offline businesses can no longer afford to forego investing in Websites and online advertising, Nielsen reported Tuesday.
A new survey conducted in May by Nielsen Online found that 80% of consumer electronics purchasers visited a store’s Website before buying a product in-store.  The survey also found that most consumers (58%) prefer using the Internet for product research — compared with only 25% that prefer to do their research in a brick and mortar store.

Wolters Kluwer Health and Nielsen To Provide Joint Healthcare Data

On Wednesday, Wolters Kluwer Health and Nielsen announced the creation of the Healthcare Consumer Informatics Alliance, which will provide data on consumers’ healthcare purchases, attitudes, and behaviors to healthcare marketers.
The Healthcare Consumer Informatics Alliance combines Nielsen’s knowledge of the consumer health and media space with Wolters Kluwer Health’s expertise in prescribed pharmaceuticals. 
Nielsen’s data assets include television and online ratings, consumer packaged goods marketing information, and others, while Wolters Kluwer Health brings de-identified longitudinal patient and dispensed pharmacy data. 
A joint consulting team, with members from both companies, has also been created.

CBS’s “Two and a Half Men,” “CSI: Miami,” and “Old Christine” claimed three of the top four slots in Nielsen’s ranking of primetime broadcast TV programs for Monday, July 21, 2008.  
“Two and a Half Men” and “CSI: Miami” claimed first and second place, respectively, while “Old Christine” placed fourth.  FOX’s “House” claimed third place.

Nielsen To Continue U.S. Work With Procter & Gamble

The Nielsen Company announced Tuesday it has extended its agreement with The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) to provide U.S. consumer marketing information and insights.  Nielsen currently provides marketing information services to P&G in more than 65 countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Africa.
Under the multi-year agreement, Nielsen will provide P&G with retail tracking, insights on consumer purchase behavior, marketing analytics, and Nielsen Answers™, Nielsen’s technology-based business intelligence solution.
