Women age 25-54 with at least one child — the so-called “Power Moms” – represent nearly 20 percent of the active online population, according to Nielsen Online, and they are wielding more influence than ever.
So what are Power Moms doing online? Where they spend time varies by demographic categories. For example, “Established Moms,” those aged 40-50 with three or more children at home, are heavy online shoppers, with Shopzilla.com the most popular site. Newbie Moms, aged 25-34 with one or two children at home, also enjoy online shopping, but social networking sites play a much more prominent role.
Power Moms all share a concern for the economy and seek money-saving strategies and solutions online and the number of conversations continue to grow. “Mom bloggers review everything from beauty products to cars to inkjets, enabling marketers unparalled reach to their target consumers. In an increasingly connected world, moms seek the wisdom of their online counterparts as trusted advisors,” said Jessica Hogue, research director, Nielsen Online.

I concur, and was admittedly surprised, by the number of women that shop with ME online! I didn’t realize how mainstream that even MY industry had become as an online force, and a website that is easily navigated has made it all the more influential for would-be clients! New customers to my site are drawn by informative and entertaining web pages, like the “Virtual Makeover” that allows you to change you makeup, hairstyle and color, all customized to you! I am grateful that web sites have become more “user friendly” with links to assist even the most technologically challenged, and that consumers are willing to try them out…get YOUR page up and running; don’t miss out on this timely opportunity!
I used to spend more time shopping online, but I cut back due to finances (husband took big pay cut). I actually spend more time online now than I used to, but it is the sites with the free stuff. I write a mommy blog and read a lot of other mom blogs. I frequent several good sites:
http://www.MothersClick.com, http://www.MomBlogs.com and http://www.MomCafe.com
I actually get more out of these websites than I did when I bought stuff on ebay!!! (And husband is much happier!!)

Curious as to where you get your statistics from.
“Established Moms” ages 40-50 with 3 or more children at home? Why stop at 50, and a) I don’t know too many moms with more than 3 children on average, and b) if the kids arebstill at home and not launched yet if you’re in that age bracket, well, something’s wrong with that picture.
Many Baby Boomers are techno savy and do a tremendous amount of shopping online. Baby Boomers and retirees are not only shopping online, they’re blogging. PR reps are missing the boat if they’re not targeting that market.
Many Baby Boomer such as myself are bloggers and I could list quite a few other bloggers worth mentioning. Drop me an email.

“Mom blogs” are an invaluable resource. Where else can you get such unfiltered information about topics like breastfeeding and parenting techniques? Some issues are too hard/embarassing to ask your friends about…especially when you know they disagree with you!

I’ve seen a lot more of local mom bloggers work with brands and PR firms. There have been several events facilitated by bloggers that revolve around introducing their networks to products and services (both local and national).
Here are two examples I’ve written about and participated in this year:

Also be sure to look at BlogHer’s research about how social media and blogs influence decisions to buy.
