I agree that social media seems to have taken over somewhat and is really word of mouth marketing at a new level. I don't think their impact will die off. I think that kind of thinking is propogated by dinasours afraid of change!

I see that this can be done without the twittering person knowing their contributions are serving my purpose. However, since I hope my tweets are serving their purposes, I presume that they are pleased to have people mining their tweets for good links and ideas

Search is definitely getting more and more social. That is why sites like facebook and twitter is being included in google. Search engines target things that are more into relevant information faster.

Hi, Social networks will and have certainly replaced some topics previously searched through search engines. The obvious of topics are more social in nature like current trends. Twitter’s real-time search engine capability is something that will only continue to grow and drive information seekers to. Unlike search engines that require X amount of time to index, Twitter updates information immediately, allowing many people to find out information sooner and quicker.

It's interesting how much has changed in consumer information discovery, consumption and sharing since this post originally published. The idea of brands as publishers has matured to the point of content marketing evolving as its own discipline.

I agree, a lot of blogs out there are of very low quality. It seems a large number of blogs are off-shore link farms that have teams creating poorly written content. Social media sites are great, but they are purposely keeping the search engines out. Once Google figures out a better way to sift through the information, the relevance will dwindle. A good example of this is the live Twitter display in Google SERP's.

I could be wrong, but it seems that the more experienced internet users tend to use social networking sites for their research. You can find a lot more "personal experience" type information which can be much more relevant. Of course these days with all the fake blogs you still have to consider the source.

I think that the whole Social Media becoming more relied upon than Search Engines for tracking down data will fall away once the search engines add social media sites to their own methods. I think part of the reason these social media sites have become so popular is because they purposely enclose themselves, and everyone "inside." Once Google cracks that open, it will be social media that has to rethink itself.

What these trends are showing us are the drastic changes in the overall behavior of online users. From the business perspective, we can directly see that the keyword here is "Trust". Sad to say that a handful of marketers out there still don't get the message, they thought that bombarding sales pitches to their email list will make them a Sale and earn them big time. This old school tactic is fading at a lightning speed. There was an old advertising technique that I thought what socializers are using..it's called "Word-of-mouth" combine them with social media sites and you get the figures above.
