I Completely agree with you. This could easily be triggered by personality traits. It would have been more convincing if they conducted a paired sample paired sample test using the same subject before using SM and then after using SM, and see the impact it really has.

The comparison with postal mail is tricky. Postal mail is actually on the rise, thanks mostly to the boom in online shopping. The only segment to fall is person-to-person letters, and I agree that people will write fewer emails to their friends. But we still have a long way to go until people will feel confident corresponding with their bank via a social network site.

@Mark L: Email eroded the direct mail space due to increased cost- and time-savings. The gain of SM over email is negligible in those areas, if at all. What will change is how each of those channels is used/accepted.

SM usage drives increased email usage and will until there is another simple and ubiquitous replacement for it.

Great information understanding that this is a quick pass. It will be interesting to see how outcome changes as additional variables are backed out.

I did use this data in my own blog post, http://tinyurl.com/y8jwhen. Feel free to leave a comment there if you like.

Cheers

This result doesn't surprise me really.

I'd be interested to see the correlation between email consumption and overall time spent on the computer as well as the size of the participants online network.

I'm also not sure if time is an appropriate indicator for 'consumption'. Sometimes writing a single email can take me an hour - as I am using the email to create a well crafted communication (unlike the tid bits I can throw out through social media). This doesn't mean I've consumed more email than social media though. Perhaps a better definition of 'consumption' would help drive the testing to achieve meaningful results?

In my experience, social networking apps do in some cases replace emails. I find that I Skype- or Facebook-chat a lot with my team, especially in one-on-one instances. While Gmail has this chat facility, Ms Outlook does not.

For me, social media has almost entirely replaced usage of my personal (non-work) e-mail. However, for work, e-mail still remains the most-used method of communication. I would assume others are experiencing this same thing.
