Nielsen IAG Ranks Most Liked, Most Recalled TV Ads

July 3, 2008

Taco Bell’s Fruista Freeze spot, which features a giant talking turtle, topped Nielsen IAG’s list of the 10 most-liked new TV ads featured in Advertising Age on Wednesday.

The Ad Age list also ranked the 10 most-recalled ads for the four-week period from May 19 to June 15, 2008.  Cymbalta’s “Where does depression hurt; Who does depression hurt?” ad topped that list.

Nielsen IAG measures consumer engagement with television programs, national commercials and product placements.

I can’t figure out who to write to about the cruelty–even danger–of the Cymbalta ad. I have suffered episodes of severe depression all my life (I’m now 53). One excruciatingly painful part of being clinically depressed is the perception that you are hurting the people you love. This kind of thinking even results in thoughts of suicide, because you reason that your family would be better off without you.

So, when the Cymbalta ad says “who does depression hurt…everyone”, it’s irresponsible and cruel and a very bad design for an ad about depression.
