DTV Adoption Now Above 99% in U.S.

The Nielsen Company reported that as of August 30, 2009, 99.4 percent of U.S. homes are able to receive digital television signals. This is a gain of more than 572,000 homes in the last month and 1.8 million homes since the week of the June 12 digital television transition. As of August 30, only 710,000 homes were unable to receive digital signals.

    Break it down. How many over the air viewers have migrated to cable or satellite?

    How robust are over-the-air DTV signals? How many viewers can no longer receive channels they had no problem receiving with analog?

    Was the DTV transition, with its reception problems, the utilization of interference-prone “low V” channel assignments, designed to destroy broadcast TV, forcing consumers to pay for what they previously could receive for free?

    What effect did the digital transition have on the viability of OTA broadcast TV — and why?
