Much of what Nielsens does I find fascinating, as well as other research companies - ie on lifestyle, finance and politics. Today I had my first flexiday in ages, and woke up to the headline that "McDonalds is pulling out of Iceland" as a result of the recent economic problems, and thought would the average person here envy those in Iceland or not? With all the publicity on fast food etc lately, and the fact that they only have 3 outlets I thought it most amusing.

The first time I ever saw a senior leaned over to pick up a penny, my parents said 'well, they grew up in the Depression'. The idea was that they'd been so exposed to hard times that their habits stayed with them well beyond when it was rational. Some have told stories about Walmart executives or others dropping nickels in Sam Walton's path to watch him pick them up, well after he was a billionaire. The 'hangover' period from this recession will last much longer than is rational. It also makes sense that countries who have been in an almost irrational growth mode or subject to price variability pre-recession would be less likely to have a long hangover period.
