This is very superb article which gives a clear concept that business-to-business marketers use a powerful tool like SIC codes / NAICS codes for strategic and tactical applications. These codes can be viewed or used world wide for industrila and business level. From guide prospecting to target marketing these tools are playing a vital role. This innovative applications moved the segmentation systems in consumer marketing.

Excellent article, thank you.

I especially agree that new B2B solutions are being created all the time.

One very important factor in creating new B2B solutions is the selection of industry classification system to use. SIC codes / NAICS codes are intended for use in North American; they have their origins in the US in the 1930s; and by law NAICS codes can only be updated every five years. The UN's ISIC codes are intended for global use; but they, as well as SIC/NAICS codes, are viewed by many as too high level to effectively segment industries at the true line of business level (where true competition takes place, according to strategy gurus like Harvard Professor Michael E. Porter).

One non-government provider of a global industry classification system at the line-of-busineess level is eCompetitors Inc. With over 10,000 industries defined, accounting for more than 95% of the global economy, the segmentation is much more meaningful and will, in your terms, "lead more marketers to explore how information products can help them gain an edge in an increasingly competitive world".
