Nielsen’s latest automotive industry overview tracked the online conversations, and the steadily declining price, of diesel over the last 12 months. Though diesel has been a hot topic within alternative fuel buzz at times, a downward trend in discussion over the past year speaks to a decline in consumer interest.

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle and washingtonpost.com took top honors in Scarborough Research’s biannual Newspaper Penetration Report. According to the survey, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle’s print edition was read by 78 percent of the adults in the market. It also took the top spot in the Integrated Newspaper Audience rankings, which measures the percent of adults in a market who read the newspaper in print form, on the Internet, or did both during the past week, with 80 percent.

Seven in 10 consumers agree that advertising contributes to economic growth, while eight in 10 agree that advertising helps create jobs, according to a new survey of 25,420 consumers in 50 countries conducted by The Nielsen Company for the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) in March-April 2009.
Additionally, 68% feel that, as a critical driver of competition between companies, advertising leads to better products and lower prices. Consumers’ views on the economic benefits of advertising are broadly consistent across the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

The new panel increases Nielsen’s measurement of Web sites from 3,000 to more than 30,000, provides better representation of Hispanics, teens, and cell phone-only households, and improves coverage of multiple personal computers in households. The new Internet measurement panel is more than eight times larger than Nielsen’s previous sample.

As consumers continue to tighten their wallets, product manufacturers are feeling the pinch. As the “great recession” continues and consumers hear conflicting messaging about when the U.S. economy will improve, shoppers from all income levels are increasingly seeking out and taking advantage of deals at the grocery store. Whether in the form of store promotion or deal or manufacturers coupon, deal rates are up more than 8% from a year ago for households earning more than $70K, a faster rise than the 6% uptick for middle-income households ($30K-$69.9K) and 5% gain for the lower income households earning less than $30K per year.

[read more]Spurred by warmer weather and slowing food inflation, grocery sales in the UK grew 5 percent in the 12 weeks ending June 13th, and annual gains to date stood at 3.6 percent, according to Nielsen. All of the top British grocery retailers posted gains, with one exception, and Waitrose in particular turned in an impressive performance with 8.4 percent growth.
